CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) - A Virginia State Police trooper is recovering in the hospital after he was hit by a driver early Wednesday morning, according to officials.
Virginia State Police spokesperson Sgt. Michelle Anaya says the trooper, Sgt. V. Smith, was parked on the south side of the Gilmerton Bridge in a properly marked work zone. He had his emergency lights on so as to alert drivers of scheduled road work.
Just before 1:30 a.m., Anaya says Billinda Colonna, 24, of Zuni crashed her 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee head-on into Sgt. Smith's vehicle.
Sgt. Smith went to Sentara Norfolk General for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Colonna was taken into custody and charged with DUI maiming. She's currently behind bars.
According to Virginia State Police dispatch, the crash is no longer blocking lanes on Route 13. The Gilmerton Bridge reopened to drivers Wednesday at 5 a.m. as was previously scheduled.
