A 20-year-old Newport News man suffered life-threatening injuries after a shooting in the 600 block of 30th Street early Sunday morning, police say.
Residents heard gunshots about 5 a.m. and found Robert Henry Brown Jr. lying wounded on their front porch, said Lou Thurston, spokesman for the Newport News Police Department. Brown was taken to the hospital with at least two gunshot wounds to his chest and head. He was in critical condition as of Sunday night.
A family of seven, including two children, were asleep inside the house at the time, said resident Carolyn Meredith.
t's just crazy," Meredith said.
Angel Baldwin, 19, was asleep in the living room when she heard gunshots and called 911 after discovering the wounded man. The family didn't know Brown, but had seen him around the neighborhood.
"I was in shock because I haven't ever seen anything like that in my life," said Baldwin, who is Meredith's daughter-in-law.
The family members said the 600 block of the street was usually quiet, but added shootings happen too frequently on weekends in the Southeast community.
Both Meredith and Baldwin said they try to stay inside at night because of the violence in the streets. They both would like to move. Meredith worries about her kids' safety.
"They need to get these guns off the streets," Meredith said.
