A man jumped from a Hamptonoverpass Tuesday afternoon, Hampton police said.
Officers were dispatched to an overpass on Cunningham Drive and Interstate 64 shortly before 12:30 p.m. after receiving reports that a man was attempting to jump from the overpass, said Sgt. Jason Price, Hampton police spokesman. He said by the time officers arrived on the scene the man had jumped.
Virginia State Police is investigating the incident, Price said.
State police spokeswoman Sgt. Michelle Anaya said state police responded to an incident Tuesday afternoon that tied up three lanes of traffic in the area for about 20 minutes.
State police provided few details about the incident citing a policy not to provide information on suicides and attempted suicide.
It is unclear if the man died.
The man involved in the incident on Interstate 64 near Mercury Boulevard was transported to Riverside Regional Medical Centerwith life-threatening injuries, said a Virginia State Police spokeswoman.
Police have not identified the male involved in the incident, said Sgt. Michelle Anaya, a spokeswoman for Virginia State Police. Westbound lanes of I-64 were re-opened to traffic by 1:10 p.m.
Virginia State Police continue to investigate, she said.
