Man shot in Norfolk critically injured

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - A man shot in Norfolk early Sunday morning suffered critical injuries, according to police.

Norfolk Police responded to the 500 block of N. Military Highway near the Ramada Inn around 2:03 a.m. for reports of a gunshot victim. Officers arrived to find a man suffering a gunshot wound, according to police spokeswoman Karen Parker-Chesson.

Medics took the man to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital where he underwent surgery. Doctors expect him to survive, Parker-Chesson said.

She said the shooting took place after two men begin fighting on the balcony of the hotel near a party attended mostly by juveniles. The fight continued to the ground level.

The suspects observed the fight from the swimming pool area and fired multiple shots into the crowd. Police described the suspects as two men wearing red bandannas that partially covered their faces.

The hotel room where the fight started was rented by the mother of a 16-year-old who hosted the event, Parker-Chesson said. Police charged the mother with contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
