NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - A 13-year-old died and a 15-year-old wounded in a double shooting in the East End late Sunday afternoon.
Newport News police spokesman Lou Thurston said officers responded to the shooting at 4:19 p.m. near the corner of 31st Street and Orucutt Avenue. They arrived to find a 13-year-old Hampton male dead from a gunshot wound to the back, and a 15-year-old male suffering from a gunshot wound to the arm.
10 On Your Side spoke to the 15-year-old boy's mother. She says her son is at home recovering, but devastated about the loss of his best friend.
The 15-year-old's mother told WAVY.com the boys were at a nearby corner store when her son says three teens started shooting at them. Newport New Police spokesperson Lou Thurston says detectives are following up on information they gathered at the scene to find the suspect or suspects in the shooting.
"We're looking at some different theories I guess. We don't have anything really definitive at this point," said Thurston.
